Overall Role & Responsibility

The Office of the Provost provides academic leadership and policy oversight for the research enterprise on the Reynolda Campus. The Provost’s Office sets research strategy and infrastructure, oversees internal funding and faculty development, supports large and complex proposals and interdisciplinary initiatives, and develops, optimizes, and implements the faculty policies — including those in the Faculty Handbook — within which sponsored work is conducted. The Provost’s Office works alongside faculty and partners across campus to turn funded ideas into workable projects.

Vice Provost for Research, Scholarly Inquiry and Creative Activity (VPRSICA)

The VPRSICA works with campus partners to support all things related to research, scholarship and creative work. She is responsible for guiding strategic cross-school academic initiatives, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthening University research infrastructure and compliance, and fostering opportunities for collaboration within and beyond the University.  Areas of responsibility include:

  • Provost-Sponsored Centers & Institutes
  • Strategic Interdisciplinary Academic Initiatives
  • Innovation, Partnerships, and Wake Downtown
  • Office of Research & Sponsored Programs
  • Research Integrity, Security and Compliance
  • Grant writing mentorship and support
  • Strategic communications and marketing for research, scholarship, and creative work
Faculty Development and Proposal Support
  • Lead faculty development initiatives that promote research excellence and support faculty at all career stages, through collaborations with the Assistant Provost for Faculty Development.
  • Provide proposal review and feedback prior to submission — including programs such as Quality Circles and Hanover Research resources — through the research team.
  • Help faculty turn a funded idea into a workable plan, together with partners across campus.
Internal Funding
  • With the Research Advisory Council, oversee the review and award of internal grants (administered in partnership with ORSP).
Policy and Faculty Affairs
  • Publish and maintain the Faculty Handbook and the faculty policies that govern appointments, workload, and research salary.
  • Oversee, with the deans, faculty workload and the academic-year research-salary framework, including course releases and the disposition of liberated salary funds.
