Overall Role & Responsibility

The Graduate School oversees the academic appointment, support, and professional development of the graduate students who contribute to sponsored research on the Reynolda Campus. It sets and administers graduate assistantship stipend levels, tuition and fee policy, and the standards for graduate appointments. The Graduate School partners with PIs, departments, GCMs, and ORSP to ensure that graduate student personnel on awards are appointed, supported, and trained consistent with University policy and sponsor requirements.

Graduate Student Appointments and Support
  • Establish and publish graduate assistantship stipend levels (the annual stipend tables) used to budget graduate research assistants on proposals.
  • Administer graduate student tuition and fee policy on sponsored projects, including the expectation that tuition and fees be requested in budgets that include at least one semester of a graduate student’s effort.
  • Oversee the appointment, enrollment, and good standing of graduate research and teaching assistants supported on awards.
  • Coordinate with Graduate Program directors, departments, PIs, and GCMs on graduate student appointments, funding, and academic progress.
Postdoctoral Affairs
  • Postdoctoral appointments are managed through Human Resources and postdoctoral professional development is managed through Dr. at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.
Professional Development and Training
  • Offer professional development for graduate students, including career coaching, academic job-search support, and careers-beyond-academia resources.
  • Support responsible and ethical conduct of research (RCR) training and mentoring for graduate students, in coordination with ORSP and federal-agency requirements.
Academic Policy and Oversight
  • Maintain the graduate academic policies, bulletins, and handbooks that govern graduate study and appointments.
  • Coordinate with Graduate Program Directors to ensure that graduate students supported on awards meet enrollment, degree-progress, and good-standing requirements
